Leukemia and Lymphoma Society: Nonprofit Spotlight

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society: Nonprofit Spotlight

March 28, 2024 by Giving Assistant Editorial Team

When you hear the word cancer, what’s the first word that comes to mind?

If you work for—or have been supported by—the almost 80-year-old Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the first word you’d think of might be survival.

Or may be even eradication.

That’s because the goal of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) is to eradicate the pain and suffering associated with cancer, and help patients and their loved ones lead better lives.

The LLS has not only been providing quality, affordable, and coordinated care worldwide for 76  years, but also focusing on research that might completely derail the disease.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society: Curing Cancer

What is The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society?

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society do

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is a globally-renown nonprofit that supports cancer patients and their families while funding critical, innovative medical research, and racing alongside top scientists and physicians to cure blood cancers once and for all.

The nonprofit was founded in the 1940s by the grieving family of 16-year-old Robert “Robbie” Roesler de Villiers, who lost his life to leukemia in 1944. The foundation formed by Robbie’s family was small, but mighty, helping to steer science down a path towards treatments for a disease that, at the time, had a devastating 100% mortality rate.

The LLS has grown globally since then and contributed to the belief that leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and other blood cancers are all curable. The nonprofit has backed this stance with more than $1.3 billion dollars, including a $100 million multi-year children’s initiative.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society invests in research initiatives to increase survival rates for children and others who are battling their ways through antiquated—and sometimes harsh—medical treatments, while providing information, education, and support for patients’ families.

A few moving statistics:

  1. 40% of pediatric cancers are blood cancers.
  2. 80% of childhood cancer survivors develop one or more chronic illnesses as a result of their treatment.
  3. There are only four oncology drugs that have been approved for first use in children in the last 40 years.

They also maintain an expansive network for patients, loved ones, and caregivers to find the support they need most. This includes peer-to-peer support, specialists to speak to, and different forms of financial aid for patients.

Donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society can help make life more comfortable for more adults, teens, and children currently enduring cancer treatments, as well as for their families, doctors, researchers, and everyone working right now to break down the barriers en route to new, innovative care and treatment options. More importantly, every donation brings the world one step closer to curing blood cancers.

Cancer is tough. With your help, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will continue to be tougher. Supporting The LLS will help it continue the research and education necessary to help defeat these diseases.
