In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, police raided a gay bar at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. But patrons of the bar and neighboring citizens fought back, rioting and protesting for six days. Today, many remember the “Stonewall Riots” as the catalyst for the American gay rights movement.
Just one year later in 1970, the first gay pride marches took place in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, commemorating the uprising—which is why we celebrate Pride Month in June now!
