In America today, hundreds of childhood cancer charities are hard at work serving the nearly 16,000 kids and teens who will be diagnosed with cancer this year, each organization with a different story, yet all with the same vision: a world without cancer.
When 4-year-old Alex set up her first lemonade stand in 2000, that was her vision, too.
By 2004—the year she passed away at age 8 after a lifelong battle against brain cancer—Alex had raised more than $1 million for cancer patients and research…
…and over $200 million by 2020.
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation Turns Lemons Into Life-Saving Lemonade
What is Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation?
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) is a nonprofit supporting the families of childhood cancer patients, hospitals, engaging local communities, and funding childhood cancer research, all in the name of a cancer-free future. Inspired by their daughter Alex’s successful lemonade stand fundraisers—and her memory—the nonprofit was founded in 2005 by Alex’s parents, Liz and Jay Scott, a year after Alex’s passing.
In addition to funding childhood cancer research, the ALSF works to help improve cancer patients’ care and quality of life, and helps families with treatment-related travel expenses.
What does the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation do?
Alex’s Lemonade Stand provides dozens of community, emotional, and financial support services to families affected by childhood cancer, while also funding critical cancer-related research through its own grant program. To date, the grant program has supported nearly 150 research institutions, whose work has translated into better treatment and care for cancer patients.
These are just a few of the programs ALSF Grants have funded:
- Childhood Cancer Data Lab makes cancer data more accessible for researchers
- The Crazy 8 Initiative brought together more than 100 experts to work toward a cure
- Travel for Care Program offsets family travel expenses
- SuperSibs empowers children with siblings impacted by cancer
Why Support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation?
The Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation relies on donations and volunteers to ensure every family that seeks their support is able to receive it, and to keep potentially cancer-curing research initiatives on track.
Donations fund programs that help pay travel expenses and lodging for families venturing long distances for promising treatments for their children, as well as programs that help support the siblings of kids battling cancer. Your donations even help pay for families struggling to afford some of the expensive medications their children need to get healthy, and stay comfortable.
Every dollar is also another candle lit in memory of Alex. If an eight-year-old girl can raise $1 million in four years, imagine what the rest of us can do together?
