Everyday at GlobalMojo the chatter’s nonstop about APIs, XMLs, coding and other techy topics; but, as each day comes to an end, we’re reminded of who we’re really serving: the millions of deserving nonprofits. We take pride in all that techy talk simply so that these great organizations can continue to give back to the communities and individuals, like cancer fighter Osiris, they support.
Osiris Rios was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with leukemia in May 2006.
Osiris landed in City of Hope in Duarte, CA for his cancer treatment, only to relapse several years later. His refractory leukemia was resistant to chemotherapy, which meant he couldn’t receive the stem cell transplant he needed.
His only option was a brand new treatment pioneered at City of Hope: TomoTherapy. The treatment system allows oncologists to focus exclusively on areas of the body containing cancerous cells. This meant killing these cells with minimal exposure to the healthy, major organs.
City of Hope was confident about their new cancer treatment. TomoTherapy would hopefully have fewer side effects, better outcomes and remission.
“I was nervous at first, since I was the second patient on this particular study, but I had few options and was blessed with a great physician who I trusted,” Osiris said.
Osiris has since recovered and as of June 2010, he received his AA degree at Los Angeles Community College. He hopes to attend the University of California, Los Angeles, to pursue a career as a museum curator and specialist in the preservation of indigenous textiles and clothing.
“I am very interested in fashion and Mesoamerican culture, so it made sense for me to combine these two passions,” Osiris said. “I was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, and I want to focus on preserving my ancestral heritage. I’m glad that City of Hope has given me the chance to pursue my dreams.”Today more than 150 City of Hope patients have been treated with TomoTherapy. Oncologists from around the world have invited City of Hope physicians to share their techniques.
In July 2011, City of Hope became #17 in this year’s top cancer hospitals across the country. It was also recently designated as a comprehensive cancer center, the highest honor bestowed by the National Cancer Institute. It continues to be a leader in research, treatment, and education for cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases.
