Tens of thousands of people, mostly children, have already died in what is being described by aid agencies as the worst humanitarian crisis there in two decades. Over 11 million people in the Horn of Africa – where Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya meet – are in desperate need of food and water as they face the worst drought in 60 years.
For all you GlobalMojo do-gooders out there, the children in Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia need you more than ever. Read on for eight simple simple ways you can help…
#1 Donate directly – You can donate directly to these great organizations which are all providing relief to the 11 million people affected in the Horn of Africa. UNICEF says $10 is enough to feed a child for 10 days or provide 321 sachets of nutrient powder to boost infant survival and development.
#2 Text – You don’t need a fancy pants app or even a smartphone to do this!
- Text SURVIVE to 20222 to donate $10 to Save the Children
- Text AFRICA to 30333 to donate $5 to Red Cross Canada
- Text FOOD to 864233 to donate $10 to UNICEF
#3 Spread the word – We’re going to make the obvious assumption that you have access to the Internet, so you can easily share the news about Horn of Africa. Tweet using #HornofAfrica, reblog photos, post an article of your Facebook wall. You can’t create a whole rescue team overnight, but you can capture the hearts of your friends and family and inspire them to get involved too.
#4 Paste an ad to your blog/website – This goes back to spreading the word. Have a blog or website? Consider pasting one of these banner ads to your page to spread the word and to encourage donations. Just like this!
#5 Enter to win an espresso machine – Calling all coffee lovers! When you donate $20 to CARE.org, Barista Nation will send you a free Barista Nation or Stella di Caffé t-shirt AND you’re entered to win a Stella di Caffé home espresso machine! The winner will be announced on September 13th. The donations go toward CARE’s immediate efforts of providing safe water, sanitation, and emergency aid to newly arrived refugees in Dadaab. More details here.
#6 Buy a t-shirt – The Africa T by Duane Stephenson is a good looking tee available for both men and women. 100% of the proceeds go to the United Nations World Food Programme to provide “food for another child, another woman on the edge of survival.”
#7 Take a 1 min. quiz – For every person who takes this short quiz on the drought in the Horn of Africa, a child will receive a warm meal thanks to an anonymous donor to WFP. Test your knowledge, then challenge your friends!
#8 Host a fundraising social – If you’re a member of an organization, whether it be a book club or the Sierra Club, consider hosting a fundraising social, breakfast fundraiser, or maybe even a silent auction. Reach out to your local bakeries and cafes to donate food and coffee to your event (or better yet… a potluck!) Let admission be a $5 to $10 donation. Check out Hatlife’s BBQ for Horn of Africa. Socialize for a good purpose!
No one knows how soon the 11 million people of the Horn of Africa will be relieved from the famine, but we know one thing for sure—it’s important we don’t stop supporting these countries. Millions in Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya lack basic necessities every day. You can support organizations like World Food Programme with their long-term efforts by supporting them as your cause on your GlobalMojo dashboard.
